Despite the fact that the policy of perestroika in USSR, and so in Ukraine as well, had been declared by M. Gorbachov in 1985, it practically was not reflected on the ideologized masses in Ukraine up till 1989. The Institute of History of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR at that time was still in the captivity of old Russo-centristic imaginations about the history of Ukraine. At the beginning of 1989 it tried to publish a great monograph (titled “The Problems of the History of Ukraine in newest Nonmarxsistic Historiography (Critical Analysis)” — more than 800 p. of typescript, by Russian language, chief editor I. Khmil'). The contents of it was devoted to the critique of “nonmarxsistic” — mainly so called bourgeois-nationalistic — historiography of Ukraine. The review which was written on this work by J. Dashkevych for the publishing house in 1989 is published now. The reviewer proves unscientific methods of the authors' investigation approach, their dogmatism, falsification of the history of Ukraine, and very low informative level as well.
As an example of the authors' style their “critical” examination of the article of J. Stepaniv (pseudonym of J. Dashkevych) about the Turkish document in the Ukrainian language from the middle of the 16 century (see Harvard Ukrainian Studies, Cambr.-Mass. 1977, vol. 1, № 2, p. 211–224) is published.
